RACE HISTORY:
The first Detroit Grand Prix was in 1982 and it started as a Formula One race through the streets of downtown Detroit before becoming a CART-sanctioned race in 1989. The race moved to Belle Isle in 1992 continuing under the CART/Champ Car banner until 2001. After the success of the Super Bowl in Detroit in 2006, Roger Penske and the Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) teamed up to bring an annual national sporting event to the city of Detroit and spearheaded the return of the Grand Prix in 2007 on Belle Isle. After challenging economic times delayed the event after the 2008 season, the Grand Prix returned in 2012 with Chevrolet as the title sponsor of the event and the current promotional group as a subsidiary of the DDP. The 2019 event marked the 30th Grand Prix in Detroit's history. The event was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but returned in 2021 with limited attendance due to health and safety protocols in place for the event. After decades on Belle Isle, the 2023 Grand Prix returned to its roots on the Downtown Detroit streets for the first time since 1991.
WINNERS AT THE DETROIT GRAND PRIX:
Chip Ganassi Racing driver Alex Palou etched his name into IndyCar history as the first winner of the new downtown Detroit course, part of the Grand Prix's move back to the streets of the city after years on Belle Isle. Palou won from the pole position to win the 2023 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear for his second victory of the season and sixth career IndyCar win.
In the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, Canadian Daniel Morad and Bryce Ward drove to victory in the Chevrolet Detroit Sports Car Classic Grand Sport (GS) class-only 100-minute race on the streets of Detroit. Morad snatched the lead away from RS1 driver Stevan McAleer with 34 minutes remaining in the race. From there, Morad opened a gap and held on for the win. It was both drivers’ first victory in Michelin Pilot Challenge competition.
INDY NXT by Firestone returned to the Motor City for a doubleheader weekend. Rookie Reece Gold earned a dramatic first career victory passing the crippled car of leader Nolan Siegel on the final straightaway to win Race 1 of the INDY NXT by Firestone Detroit Grand Prix ahead of fellow rookie Jagger Jones, grandson of 1963 Indianapolis 500 winner Parnelli Jones, and Ernie Francis Jr. in the No. 99 HMD Motorsports with Force Indy car. All three podium finishers earned the first top-three results of their respective INDY NXT by Firestone careers.
INDY NXT rookie Nolan Siegel bounced back and earned a measure of redemption after heartbreak in Race 1. Siegel led by more than five seconds with two turns to go in the first race of the INDY NXT by Firestone Detroit Grand Prix on June 3 when a driveshaft broke while the checkered flag was waving. He limped across the finish line in eighth place in the 45-lap race won by Reece Gold. In Race 2, Siegel took the lead on Lap 2 and survived two late restarts to win Race 2 of the INDY NXT by Firestone Detroit Grand Prix doubleheader on June 4. The win was the maiden INDY NXT victory for the series rookie.
15-year-old Brent Crews was the first Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli winner on the brand-new Detroit Grand Prix course on the downtown streets. After taking over the lead on Lap 12, Crews held off former IndyCar driver Rafa Matos and Thomas Merrill to win his fifth-career race and earn his second-career street circuit victory in the 3-Dimensional Services Group Muscle Car Challenge on June 3.
In Race 2 of the Detroit Grand Prix doubleheader, 16-year-old Connor Zilisch drove through the field to win the 3-Dimensional Services Group Motor City Showdown after a technical infraction before the green flag relegated him to a 28th-place start. Zilisch was awarded the victory when Thomas Annunziata was penalized for avoidable contact that sparked a multicar accident in the closing laps. The win was Zilisch’s second Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli win of 2023.
SUSTAINABILITY:
The 2023 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear was the most sustainable event in the history of the Grand Prix in the Motor City. Building on the momentum of the most sustainable Detroit Grand Prix in history, the 2023 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear has been recognized as the first event in Michigan to achieve gold-level event certification through the Council for Responsible Sport. The recognition also distinguishes the Detroit Grand Prix as the first-ever motorsports event worldwide to earn gold level Responsible Sport certification.
The Council for Responsible Sport recognizes and certifies events that meet a set of criteria for social and environmental responsibility objectives in order to make a positive impact in their communities. Since 2007, the organization has certified more than 200 events worldwide. Through its increased sustainability efforts, significant economic impact and numerous community outreach programs, the Detroit Grand Prix blazed a new trail in 2023 on its way to reaching gold-level certification. The event also implemented an enhanced and more comprehensive recycling and waste diversion program, working with its partners at Priority Waste. Combined with the efforts from the racing series competing in Detroit, including the cars from the NTT INDYCAR SERIES running on 100% renewable fuel and featuring a new eco-friendly Firestone Firehawk tire compound from the guayule desert shrub, the Grand Prix is one of the most environmentally-conscious events in Michigan.
PARTNERS:
With many new and returning partners on board for the return to racing on the Downtown streets of Detroit, the Grand Prix will feature the most comprehensive partner lineup in its history. As the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear returned to the Streets of Downtown Detroit for the first time since 1991, the event enjoyed unprecedented partner support. A total of 86 local and national corporate partners were behind the return of the event to its original home in Downtown Detroit, surpassing the previous high of 75 companies during the 2019 Grand Prix. This year’s partnership portfolio includes a record 32 sponsors that were new to the Grand Prix in 2023.
BACK TO THE STREETS IN 2024:
In 2023, the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear returned to its original home, on the streets of Downtown Detroit. With a 1.7-mile street circuit incorporating Jefferson Avenue and Atwater Street, along Detroit's Riverfront, the Grand Prix brought a festival-like atmosphere to the city. With support from partners American Axle & Manufacturing, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Delta Air Lines, Delta Dental, DTE Foundation, Henry Ford Health, Huntington Bank, Lear Corporation and PNC Bank, the Grand Prix’s Community Partnership program is embracing and engaging the neighborhoods and communities across Detroit like never before. The program is helping create free access throughout more than half of Grand Prix venue all event weekend with nine free viewing platforms around the Downtown racing circuit, producing murals designed by Detroit students that will be displayed trackside during the Grand Prix and creating opportunities for locally-owned and operated companies through the Small Business Straightaway.
