IndyCar Champions Will Power and Rick Mears to Appear Friday at the North American International Auto Show
Power, a two-time winner of the Chevy Dual in Detroit Verizon IndyCar Series races held annually at Belle Isle Park, and Mears, the four-time Indianapolis 500 winner and three-time INDYCAR champion, will tour the popular NAIAS show floor at Cobo Center in Detroit and meet with fans as they begin to build excitement for the upcoming season and the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear, June 1-3.
After participating in a Detroit-area media tour on Friday morning, Power and Mears will arrive at Cobo Center to experience the sights and sounds of the 2018 NAIAS. The two champions will then visit with members of the local and national media in the INDYCAR Café on the main show floor where they'll see the new 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series universal aero kit car that was unveiled during Media Preview Days at the Auto Show last week.
Power and Mears - along with Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear Chairman Bud Denker, Verizon IndyCar Series President of Competition Jay Frye and Monica Martinez, Senior Vice President of External Affairs for Comerica Bank, will move to the Cobo Center Atrium Stage at 12 pm for a Grand Prix discussion moderated by WXYZ-TV sports anchor Brad Galli. After the on-stage presentation, Power and Mears will sign autographs and take photos with fans in the Atrium.
Fans are welcome to attend the Family Day activities in the Cobo Center Atrium free of charge as NAIAS tickets are not required to access the Atrium. Driving the No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet for Team Penske, Power is one of the most decorated drivers competing in the Verizon IndyCar Series as he has produced 32 victories and 50 pole positions over the course of his distinguished career. The Australian racer drove to victory on the Streets of Belle Isle in both 2014 and 2016. Mears remains one of the most revered drivers in motorsports history. With 33 career wins and four memorable victories in the Indy 500, he ranks among the all-time greats. A longtime team advisor for Team Penske, Mears also performed well in the Detroit Grand Prix during his driving days as he posted top-five finishes in three consecutive races run on the streets of Detroit.
